Popularization and fashion of strong and toned body carries risks that can’t be seen immediately. And the tendency in bodybuilding is not healthy nowadays.
On the one hand, bodybuilding and fitness contribute to the formation of healthy lifestyle. Physical activity, proper nutrition, health care, giving up bad habits, etc. have a positive effect on the person and his body. Bodybuilding also slows down the aging of the body, affects the health of the cardiovascular system, the amount of muscle and bone mass, improves mood and maintaining body fat on a low level that prevents cancer.
All this is true if we are talking about bodybuilding without the use of pharmacological agents. and with keeping reasonable limits.
But in case of the dominant trend, the situation is quite different and tendency in bodybuilding is not healthy. Too often, the use of medications in bodybuilding accelerates aging, adversely affects the health of the cardiovascular system (pharmacology, significant excess muscle mass, hypertension), causes cardiac remodeling, affects the formation of cancer (a large amount of meat in the diet every day for example), affects mood swings (pharmacology). In turn, the use of insulin can be even life-threatening for bodybuilders.
As you can see, bodybuilding is a broad concept that carries, among other things, great health risks, especially if you do it wrong. Unfortunately, people who want to build large muscle mass prefer the appearance of the body and neglect health.
Why do people choose “shortcuts”? There are many reasons for this. What for social media? Are they the reason why tendency in bodybuilding is not healthy nowadays?
Reason # 1: Social networks
Social networks contribute to the spread of the problem. This is one of the reasons why tendency in bodybuilding is not healthy. With the advent of profiles on the Internet, it suddenly turns out that all the friends on Facebook or Instagram do, is only train and eat healthy food. At least it is what it seems like, when we are looking at their profiles. It would not be so bad if people did not tend to compare their mirror image with these images from the Internet.
The woman begins to think that she is too fat, unattractive, that she still has too much fat here or there, that she has too small breasts, too big hips, thin lips, big nose, etc.
Men want to gain muscles and get rid of fat whatever it takes. The situation is exacerbated by the observation of the profiles of those bodybuilders who have excellent genetic predisposition. Their silhouettes are not available for most athletes with other genes.
Many studies prove that tendency in bodybuilding is not healthy nowadays. They have shown that social networks are responsible for increased anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. One study noted that Facebook users with low self-esteem had more attractive profile photos than people with higher self-esteem. In addition, people from the first group spent much more time on Facebook.
Further research shows that Facebook users often have narcissistic disorders associated with a distorted perception of their personality (importance, uniqueness, selfishness, etc.). They believe that everything spinning around them and belongs to them. Such people have a lot of online friends, often update their status, actively participate in online discussions.
Reason # 2: Dating Apps
Although Facebook is made not only to communicate with “real” friends, but also to meet new people, it is in this respect moved with online dating apps. The rules of the game have been changed, for example, by Tinder.
Now find a soulmate or a new friend is much easier. No more need to meet friends of friends, talk to strangers at events and even more so to use for this purpose newspapers:)
Now you just need to install the app, set up a profile and you can start looking for adventures. And although characteristics like age, weight, height, preferences help to choose the right “candidates”, it is very superficial information. As a result of the popularization of this platform, users have a desire to boast of their best side. Including their body appearances.
In the era of the Internet, every man wants to look like Arnold, and every woman would like to receive compliments, look better, more beautiful, sexy and younger. Two strategies are used to achieve these goals.
The first is a kind of cheating and photo editing. Want a wasp waist? No problem! Or on the contrary to add a few centimeters here or there? Yes, easily! Some ladies can take pictures for hours to show themselves from a perfect view. Unfortunately, magic disappears under the first personal meeting in the real life.
That is why the second method is used not less often: achieving ideal body with literally all the possible ways. Including using medications, particularly pharmacology, and exhaustig workouts.
Don’t it shows that tendency in bodybuilding is not healthy?Does the use of new technologies affect the way people treat their bodies? Undoubtedly.
Researchers from Harvard University have proved that Dating apps users are more likely to use anabolic steroids, diet pills or laxatives. The researchers studied 1726 people aged 18 to 65 years. 17% of them used dating apps and 83% did not. The study was published in the journal of eating disorders on May 31, 2019
Overall, 63.6% (n = 1098) of the study group were women and 36.4% (n = 628) were men. Most women did not use Dating apps (83.3%, n = 915). These were white people (68.6%, n = 753), aged 18 to 30 years (55.8%, n = 613) and heterosexuals (86.5%, n = 950). Men showed similar results because most of them did not use similar programs (66.7%, n = 419), they were white (68.0%, n = 427), between 18 and 30 (58.8%, n = 369) and heterosexual (88.9%, n = 558).
The researchers on the basis of questionnaires determined whether the study participants tried to lose weight in an unhealthy way. It turned out that participants who used dating apps more often were trying to lose weight with vomiting, hunger strikes, laxatives, weight loss pills, bodybuilding supplements, and anabolic steroids.
The use of supplements for the most part concerned anabolic steroids. The risk of using anabolic steroids was 16.2 times higher among people using dating apps compared to the control group.
Women were more than 6 times more likely to use vomiting, 4.5 times more likely to use laxatives, 2.2 times more likely to use fasting, 4 times more likely to use “diet pills”, 5 times more likely to use dietary supplements and 26 times more likely to use anabolic-androgenic steroids.
Men were more than 11 times more likely to induce vomiting for weight loss, 9.9 times more likely to use laxatives, 3.1 times more likely to starve, 14 times more likely to use “weight loss pills”, 4 times more likely to use dietary supplements and 14 times more likely to use anabolic-androgenic steroids.
Reason #3: Television
Television is another reason why tendency in bodybuilding is not healthy. Has also influenced the emergence and development of the problem. It shows people with a flawless figure. In advertising, as a rule, we see young, physically attractive (with perfectly white, straight teeth, fashionably dressed, etc.) people. In addition, there is a lot of advertising on television that allegedly only this new “best diet”, “this new best workout” or the purchase of certain advertised products is enough to be as the person from the video.
To sum up
Due to the fact that tendency in bodybuilding is not healthy, most likely, the black market for pharmacological medications is on the rise, as more and more people want to get rid of fat and gain muscle mass despite health risks.
In pursuit to make the body “from the picture” or look like the false ideals, people do not afraid to use medications that have never existed in the official trade or are not allowed by the medical community.
